Once you get into your 40’s, checking your prostate gland is something that you need to start to concern yourself with. As you get even older, you need to schedule regular checkups with your doctor to ensure that you have a healthy prostate. When your are trying to figure out how to check your prostate gland, you should first understand its function so that you know exactly what you are looking for.

Your prostate gland serves a dual purpose in eliminating waste and to also deliver seminal fluid. Both are obviously very important and a problem with this gland can cause you to be incontinent or impotent. Neither of those are comfortable situations for any man. Your prostate gland is located just behind the rectum wall and is about the size of a walnut. There are several tubes that pass through your prostate that deliver the fluids that we spoke about above. If you are having problems with erections or experiencing problems when you are urinating, you may have cause for concern. Common symptoms are a bladder that never feels like it has been voided, burning during urination and a weak stream when you are urinating.

In order to check your prostate gland, you are going to need some surgical gloves and lubrication. Put the gloves on and lubricate your finger. When you have done this, you can then insert your finger into your rectum. As you locate the prostate, check the firmness of it. Normally, a prostate will have the consistency of soft skin. If the prostate is hard, like a knuckle, you will want to immediately bring this to the attention of your doctor.Trying to exam your own prostate can be a little difficult for people that have never had it checked before and is never as good as letting your doctor examine you. You may want to have the first exam completed by your doctor so that he can explain exactly how to go about it. After that, it will be a little easier for you do conduct a self exam.
